Dispatch

Stay on the line until the job is scheduled.

You will hear a short menu, then a person. Give the address, say you own the house, and describe the water that is standing inside. In most cities the call needs about two minutes after the menu. In Los Angeles, plan on about three. If you hang up early, the crew was never scheduled.

  1. 1

    Stop what is still running

The meter shutoff, if you can reach it safely. Power off in any room where water may have reached an outlet.

  2. 2

    Get the standing water out

Extraction first. Carpet and pad that are holding water come up. Water left in place keeps moving into the wall.

  3. 3

    Set the dry

Air movers on the wet assemblies. Dehumidifiers sized to the rooms. The equipment stays until the readings say dry, not until the floor looks better.

  4. 4

    Write down the loss

Photos of the water, the source if it is visible, and the moisture map. You keep that for the carrier. The claim itself is between you and the insurer.

Describe the house you are standing in. Do not invent damage, and do not read a script. Find the city.
